বাঙালি মুসলমানের মনের রূপরেখার সূচক হিসেবে পুঁথি সাহিত্য ও ভাষা বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন ছফা। পুঁথি সাহিত্য বাংলা সাহিত্য সম্ভারের একটি নবতর দিক উন্মোচন করে। একটি সমাজে দুইটি শ্রেণির বাস্তবতায় কোন অংশের জন্যে এই পুঁথি রচিত হয়েছিল, তাদের সামাজিক প্রয়োজন কী ছিল, সেক্ষেত্রে কোন প্রেক্ষাপটে তাদের নিজস্ব ভাষিক পরিমন্ডলে অন্য সংস্কৃতির আবাহন তৈরি হয়েছিল, মুসলিম শাসনের নেতৃস্থানীয়দের সঙ্গে বাঙালি মুসলমানের যে ভিন্নতা, এটা নৃতাত্ত্বিক ও সমাজতাত্ত্বিক আলোচনার বিষয়। পুঁথি সাহিত্য ধর্মীয় কাহিনীতে ভাস্বর। এক্ষেত্রে এ ধর্মীয় কাহিনীগুলোর চরিত্রগুলো অলৌকিক মহিমায় উজ্জ্বল। এ গ্রন্থটি মনোসমীক্ষণধর্মিতার পরিচয় বহন করে। মানুষের বিশ্বাসের জগতে এই অলৌকিক বর্ণনা কেন মানুষের যৌক্তিক ব্যাখ্যার দ্বার খুলতে পারে না, এ বিষয়গুলো সর্বদা সাধারণের মনে প্রশ্ন হিসেবে বিরাজ করে। ছফা দেখিয়েছেন, মধ্যযুগে সৃষ্ট এ সাহিত্যকর্মগুলোর নতুন সামাজিক চাহিদার দরুন তৈরি হয়েছিল। ঐতিহাসিক প্রেক্ষাপটে মুসলমানদের তুলনায় হিন্দুরা অধিক সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশ লাভ করে। এক্ষেত্রে রাজনৈতিক পট পরিবর্তনের সাথে সাথে মুসলমানদের সঙ্গে হিন্দুদের সংঘাতের সৃষ্টি ও আত্মরক্ষার প্রয়োজনে সামাজিক পরিবর্তন ও নবতর মূল্যচেতনায় সমাজের গতিপথ পরিবর্তিত হয়েছে। পুঁথি সাহিত্য, দোভাষী সাহিত্যগুলো এ ধারাবাহিকতায় সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। তবে এ ক্ষেত্রে হিন্দুদের সঙ্গে মুসলমানদের সংস্কৃতিগত বিভেদ তৈরি না হলেও মুসলমানরা নিজেদের সংস্কৃতিকে নিজেদের মত করে রূপান্তরিত করেছিলেন। এরপর ইংরেজ সময়ে দেখা যায়, একটি অভিজাত হিন্দু শ্রেণি সমাজে মাথাচারা দিয়ে ওঠে। এক্ষেত্রে মুসলমানদের অংশগ্রহণ না থাকার কারণ হিসেবে ইংরেজদের অন্ধবিদ্বেষ থেকে গড়ে তোলা ‘ডিভাইড এন্ড রুল পলিসি’-কে দায়ী করলেও, এটার মধ্য দিয়ে মুসলিম সমাজের পিছিয়ে থাকার কারণ ব্যাখ্যা করা যায় না। অনেকটা বলা যায়, সেই সুপ্রাচীন সময় থেকে বারবার ধর্ম পরিবর্তন করার ফলে বাইরের দিক ছাড়া তাদের বিশ্বাস এবং মানসিকতার মৌলবস্তুর পরিবর্তন ঘটেনি। আজ অবধি বাঙলী মুসলমানের চিন্তাধারার মূল কাঠামোটি রয়ে গেছে অপরিবর্তিত। আর সেই কথাই ছফা প্রমাণ করার চেষ্টা করেছেন নিজস্ব যুক্তি, বিশ্লেষণ আর দর্শনের মধ্য দিয়ে।

Ahmed Choffa (30 June 1943 – 28 July 2001) was a Bangladeshi poet, novelist, writer, critic, translator and intellectual. He wrote novels, poetry and non-fiction essays.
